Abstract

The stated purpose of this book is to review different audiological procedures and their applicability to the mentally retarded and other difficult-to-test individuals. The long-range goal of the publication is to stimulate further research and refinement that will assure more accurate and extensive auditory assessment of the retarded population. Pure-tone, speech, Bekesy, cortical-evoked response audiometry and acoustic impedance measurements each receive detailed analysis and discussion in separate chapters. Further, the potentials of a multitest battery for the differentiation of auditory impairments are examined. The chapter entitled Conditioning and Audiological Assessment consists, in large part, of a review of three different conditioning experiments. The final section in the book describes different autonomic nervous system responses that have potential for use in the measurement of hearing. In general, the book contains sections of information that make it a worthwhile reference for various individuals with differing degrees of audiological sophistication. The major shortcoming
