Abstract

Abstract The performance of a system for detecting the onset of overloads on rod mills is described. The systea has been tested at CODELCO El Salvador Concentrator where, due to variations on size distribution of the copper ore feed, the rod aill is frequently subject to overloads. The main input signal to the systea is the rod mill sound, after being aeasured and analog conditioned. This signal and other signals measuring the fresh ore feed and the aill water addition are fed to a computer containing a staple mathematical model. The aodel parameters are empirically estimated and an analog output signal is generated, which gives an early prediction of the overload condition. The experimental results described in this paper show that the overload condition may be predicted with an anticipation of about three minutes.
