Abstract

The historical background of audiology research at the Institute of Sound and Vibration Research is briefly described. A review of research studies in clinical audiology is presented. Topics included are the following: pure-tone audiometry-standardization and acoustic conditions; masking of the non-test ear; acoustic impedance of the middle ear; recruitment of loudness; tone decay; speech audiometry; hearing aids and binaural hearing; pseudotinnitus; objective tinnitus; hearing and personality; vestibular disorders and measurement. A review of auditory function studies is also presented. These include the following: poststimulatory masking studies; tests for central auditory dysfunction; electric response audiometry; electrocochleography.
