Abstract

Most models of the communication process include feedback as a necessary component in the functioning of the system. Although feedback is relatively easy to understand in an interpersonal context, the role and extent of feedback in mass communication is less obvious. This study examined audience ratings as a component of the feedback processes in the evolution of program types. Strong relationships were found between audience ratings and the number of programs of a given type subsequently aired.
