Abstract

The impact-parameter dependence of the Au LX-ray emission probabilities by impact of 70 MeV Ar ions was found to be in good agreement with calculated probabilities based on the SCA for direct Coulomb excitation. Two collision processes of the projectile in the solid target, leading e.g. to K-L vacancy sharing, are found to be negligible. However, the L X-ray emission probabilities appear to be influenced by multiple outer shell ionization.
