Abstract

Au adsorption on Si(001) above 850°C results in the formation of a regular ordered striped domain wall structure of a commensurate (5×3) reconstruction. The domain walls could be described by ( 29 ×3) unit cells separating anti-phase (5×3) domains of a typical width of 39 Å. Each domain wall shifts the translational vector between neighbouring (5×3) domains by one surface unit. This results in a complex LEED pattern quoted as a (5×3.2) structure.
