Abstract

SUMMARY An experiment is described in which three-week-old turkey poults exposed orally with blackhead-infected tissues developed lesions in unusual sites. Lesions were found in proventriculi, lungs, kidneys, and hearts, as well as in livers and ceca. The number of birds with lesions (75%) and the mortality rate (58%) were high in comparison with previous direct transmission of blackhead. The percentage of birds with lesions in each location is described by material used for exposure. Possible pathways used by the organisms to reach those locations are discussed.
