Abstract

The Automated Transfer Vehicle (ATV) is an ESA financed program developed by EADS Astrium Space Transportation Company for the space segment. The 1st ATV vehicle, called Jules Verne, was launched by Ariane 5 on March 9th 2008, and joined successfully the International Space Station (ISS) after an autonomous docking on April 3rd 2008. Such an automated rendezvous mission towards a manned facility requires high performances and severe safety constraints for the vehicle which is fail operational and fail safe. The scope of this document is the ATV GNC as part of the nominal Flight Control system and the additional free flight safety functions, called RMCA, ensuring the ISS safety during the Rendezvous and the departure. First, the ATV mission profile and the overall Flight Control and RMCA design are introduced. Within this context, a closer look into the designs is proposed, some performances are presented and flight operations related to these functions are described. Finally the ATV Jules Verne Flight is presented with a first post flight analysis.
