Abstract

Abstract This article discusses the concepts and definitions associated with terms such as attributable fraction, attributable risk, and probability of causation. It is emphasized that there are several incompatible definitions of attributable risk. Some of these definitions apply to concepts of excess caseload and excess rate, which are estimable from epidemiologic data; others apply to concepts of etiologic fraction and probability of causation, which are not estimable without strong assumptions about biologic mechanisms of disease.
