Abstract

When ACTFL and the MLA released their most recent statistics on second-language study in the United States, German secondary educators felt relief while alarm bells rang in America's colleges and universities. From 1990 to 1994 German enrollment among secondary school students rose slightly from 2.7% to 2.8% of the total high school population. By contrast, 9.3% of secondary school students studied French in 1994, down from 9.8% in 1990. It was no surprise that Spanish enrollment rose from 23.5% in 1990 to 27.2% in 1994.1
