Abstract

ABSTRACT We propose to generate few-fs or as X-ray laser pulses by beating of two or more X-ray laser lines with appropriatefrequencyseparation. X-ray lasers operatingon transitions in neon- or nickel-like ions typically have gain on several lineswith difference frequencies of around 10 15 Hz. Moreover, it is found in speci c cases that a few almost equidistant linesmayexhibitgain. Beatingoftheselinesresultsinaseriesofpulseswithdurationsdowntotheattosecondrange. Itisshownthat phase locking can be achieved by means of a Langmuir wave in the X-ray laser medium itself, which is resonant withthe differencefrequency. Keywords: A ttosecond pulses, laser-plasmas, X-ray laser, plasma wave. 1. INTRODUCTION During the last few years the generation of attosecond (as) pulses in the soft X-ray region has advanced to a stage atwhich their application in elds of research such as chemistry, molecular and atomic physics, solid state physics becomespossible. 1–3 First experimentsachievingas controlof electronicprocesses anddemonstratingtime-resolvedatomicinner-shell spectroscopy have already been carried out.
