Abstract

Based on surviving court books, the article examines the work of early pre-lawyers, known as attorneys-at-law, in the courts of Samogitia in the first decade of the seventeenth century. A preliminary list of such attorneys was compiled and is included in the article, the nature of the disputes they represented in court is discussed, some of the most active attorneys are identified, and their origins are discussed.
