Abstract

Summary In the context of the role of attitudes in social action, this paper discusses the achievements of a small group of Ilocano peasants who have claimed land on the frontier of settlement in Mindanao. Through hard work, mutual aid and an emphasis on investment rather than consumption, they have attained levels of living considerably higher than other Ilocano settlers or their neighbours of different cultural backgrounds. Their inspiration derives not simply from the Ilocano cultural heritage but rather from the way the leader has added to this heritage productive elements from the confused teachings of a former Filipino labor leader whose doctrines also included millenarian and Utopian elements.
