Abstract

Summary Atterbom and the Nazarenes. The author identifies a carloon in private possession in Darmstadt (fig. 1) as representing the sketch for a transparent painting intended for the famous banquet, which was held in the Villa Schultheiss outside the Porta del Popolo on the 29th April 1818 by the German artists in Rome in the honour of the Bavarian crown prince. This extensive series of paintings was planned by Cornelius and executed by a great number of artists. The cartoon of Darmstadt shows a procession of ancient poets and artists and represents the design for that part of the paintings executed by Philip Veit. The Swedish poet Atterbom was present at the banquet and from the description of the paintings, which he has given in one of his letters, we are able both to identify the cartoon and to obtain an idea of the whole series of paintings. The author adds to this some reflections on Atterbom's ideas about the Nazarene painters and the significance of his own intercourse with them. (The letters of Atterbom are also to be had translated into German under the title of Aufzeichnungen über berühmte deutsche Männer und Frauen, Berlin 1867.)
