Abstract

Abstract : This paper reports exploratory measurements of the attenuation of shock waves in tubes by orifice plates, rough walls, and cylindrical obstacles. The measurements were carried out in a four-inch shock tube driven by an explosive mixture of propane and oxygen. It appears possible to correlate the attenuation produced by obstacles placed in the flow with their Fanning friction factors. The orifice plates and cylindrical obstacles are very efficient attenuators.
