Abstract

Rheumatoid arthritis and Sjogren's syndrome are the two main connective tissue diseases associated with bronchiolar disorders, including constrictive bronchiolitis and cellular bronchiolitis. The prevalence of bronchiolitis is difficult to assess. Most patients have little or no symptoms. More severe and life-threatening bronchiolitis is possible, although rare. The diagnosis of bronchiolar involvement is based on lung imaging and lung function tests; histological proof is usually not required. Treatment includes non-specific measures (bronchodilators, vaccination, rehabilitation), long-term macrolides and a corticosteroid and/or immunosuppressive trial.
