Abstract

This chapter examines editorials and editorial articles in the Federal Republican in the first four months of 1812. The Federal Republican was chosen for investigation because of its reputation as a strongly Federalist newspaper. Editorial articles published in the newspaper can therefore be expected to reveal how far Federalists were ready to go in their attacks on the Madison administration. A study of the newspaper can thus yield information on freedom of speech and the toleration of dissent during the War of 1812. Concepts from fallacy theory and impoliteness theory are used as analytic tools. Extracts are given as illustrations in the chapter. They are thematically grouped, and the study is supplemented with an extract that contains comments in the Federal Republican on actions by Great Britain.
