Abstract

Abstract Po lice, by vir tue of their ex pe ri ence in dealing with vi o -lence, are unique in their ability to recognize and respond to an im mi nent or im me di ate risk of vi o lence. Re li able and thor ough dis cussion of judgments, the ba sis of those judg ments, and the re sponses taken by of fi cers will pro mote the rapid rec og nition of an at tack risk, im prove mem ory of events, as well as in sure better judg ment and ap pro pri ate action in the future. Training and fur ther re search fo cused on po lice of fi cer rec og nition of, re sponse to, and re porting of be hav iors with re gard to a vari able attack risk is nec es sary. Po ten tial out comes in clude im proved of fi cer and pub lic safety, better man age ment of per sonal and pub lic li a bil ity, more ef fective pros e cution, better com mu nity/po lice re lations, and im proved of fi cer health and emotional well-being, as well as pro viding a greater sense of ac count abil ity to the pub lic when there is a use of deadly force.
