Abstract

Calotermes brouni Frogg., the New Zealand dry-wood termite, attacks living overmature Pinus radiata trees in farm woodlots and shelter belts. Infestation starts in dead branches and snags and may continue into the heartwood. Most severely attacked trees are unsuitable for conversion to sawn timber. Unhygienic conditions and lack of silvicultural attention tend to enhance the danger of attack in overmature stands. No infestation by this species or by introduced Australian termites has been reported from any of the large exotic plantations.
