Abstract

In chloralose-anaesthetized greyhounds either right or left atrium was subjected to oscillations of pressure by one of three different techniques: single pulse injections of blood, rhythmic injection and withdrawal of blood, or rhythmic inflation and deflation of an air-filled balloon. Single pulse injections of blood consistently produced premature or ectopic atrial beats, which were not reflex in origin. Oscillations of pressure, if sufficiently fast, produced sustained tachycardia due to multiple ectopic beats. These observations suggest a possible mechanism for atrial dysrhythmias occurring in some patients with incompetence of mitral or tricuspid valves.
