Atresia congénita de colon. A propósito de dos casos

Abstract

Intestinal obstruction due to colonic atresia is rare. It usually results from an intra-uterine vascular injury. It is commonly located proximal to the splenic flexure. We report two cases of newborn who presented with vomiting and progressive abdominal distension. Plain abdo- minal radiographs showed multiple air-filled distended bowel loops, occupying almost the entire abdomen and a prominent colonic loop disproportionately dilated. With the diagnosis of colonic atresia both patients underwent an abdominal operation, which revealed an atretic segment of the ascending colon. The atretic segment was resected and an ileo-colic anastomosis was performed. Post-operative course was uneventful and the children were discharged in excellent condition. Colonic atresia although uncommon, should be considered as a differential diagnosis, in neonates presenting with progressive abdominal distension and symptoms of intestinal obstruction.
