Abstract

Photoelectron emission spectroscopy of atoms and clusters of Cu and Ni isolated in CO matrices was studied. The adsorption of CO on Cu films was compared to that of small Cu particles. Due to backdonation of metal electrons to the chemisorbed CO, the 2π* orbital is partly filled causing photoelectron emission below the Fermi energy. (AIP)
