Abstract

Binary liquid-vapour systems of differently sized Lennard-Jones atoms are studied by Monte Carlo simulation. Results for the surface tension and the coexisting liquid density are compared with predictions of one-fluid approximations. Small values of the excess liquid volume are explained by constructions of random packing of hard-sphere mixtures. This approach gives an interpretation of the accuracy of the van der Waals one-fluid approximation.
