Abstract

The value of the nuclear lifetime of the 3.34-MeV level in 22Ne as determined by Broude et al. by the Doppler shift attenuation method exhibits variations depending on the atomic number Z 2 of the slowing down medium. We have re-evaluated the lifetime within the framework of the Lindhard-Winther stopping theory, assuming a simple approximate form for the density of electrons associated with an atom in a solid and an effective point charge for the projectile based on experimental stopping powers. Although there are still variations in the value of the lifetime the variations appear to be systematic through the region of the transition elements.
