Abstract

X-ray diffraction, magnetic susceptibility and specific heat measurements for β-Mn 1− x Ru x alloys have been carried out. A single β-phase has been confirmed in the Ru concentration region below x=0.28. From X-ray diffraction measurements, it is regarded that Ru atoms mainly occupy site 1 (8c site). In low Ru concentration regions, β-Mn 1− x Ru x alloys behave as weakly antiferromagnetic alloys in itinerant-electron systems. In high Ru concentration ranges, on the contrary, the Néel temperature increases up to 150 K and a clear peak due to the magnetic transition is observed in the specific heat, implying that the magnetic characteristics approaches an intermediate state between the itinerant-electron and the localized-electron magnetic states.
