Abstract

It is pointed out that shielding by the outer electrons may significantly reduce the neutral current induced parity non-conserving optical rotation in atomic bismuth. A self-consistent calculation gives a reduction of order 50% in R=Im E1PNC/M1 and leads to values -14*10-8 and -12*10-8 for the 648 nm and 876 nm transitions respectively.
