Abstract

The kinetics of recovery of the distorted crystalline lattice and both long- and short-range atomic ordering in mechanically ground Cu 2MnAl Heusler alloy was studied by X-ray diffraction and magnetization measurements. After an incubation time τ the magnetization starts to increase linearly with the logarithm of time t during isothermal annealing at T as M ( t, T) = A log[ t/ τ( T)], suggesting that only the time scale is affected by the temperature. Strain-assisted atomic rearrangement induces recovery of the distorted lattice and short-range atomic ordering and B2-type long-range ordering at the same time. However, the equilibrium L2 1-type long-range ordering appears an order of magnitude later after destruction of the B2-type ordering.
