Abstract

The microstructure and composition distributions of the bulk amorphous Nd58Fe30Al10Dy2 alloy in the as-cast state have been studied using the atom probe field ion microscopy. The microstructure of the as-cast alloy comprised two phases: nanocrystalline particles and amorphous matrix phase. The exact compositions of the nanocrystalline particles and amorphous matrix have been determined for the first time. The added Dy atoms partitioned into the amorphous matrix phase. These quantitative results provide scientific basis for resolving the coercivity mechanism problems in the bulk amorphous alloys.
