Abstract

There are numerous applications for the thermoionization ion sources in nuclear physics. One of them is the use of these sources in electromagnetic isotope separators on-line, when radioactive samples are exceptionally small. The paper presents the theoretical study of the ionization processes in the source while it operates as an open ionizer (a tube). A limited review of the ion source characteristics, especially concerning source efficiency, is also given.
