Abstract

Abstract : Mode-locked oscillation is a major bottleneck in the generation of short, high-power laser pulses, for application in laser fusion, communications, or radar. The objective has been to attain a comprehensive understanding of the mode locking of lasers with specific application to high-pressure CO2 TEA lasers. Toward this end work has proceeded along both theoretical and experimental lines. A new theoretical approach was developed, applicable to both active and passive mode locking. Experiments on high-pressure CO2 lasers are in progress to substantiate the theoretical predictions. Results are summarized.
