Abstract

This paper reviews the evolution of our understanding of the impact of changes in atmospheric ozone on the Earth's climate. Ozone has an impact on climate because it absorbs radiation in the ultra-violet, visible and infrared regions of the spectrum. There has been uncertainty whether changes in stratospheric ozone act to cool or warm the climate, because of the competing impact of changes at different wavelengths. It is now believed that the observed changes in stratospheric ozone over the past two decades have acted to cool die climate, offsetting around 20% of the warming effect due to increases in carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases over the same period. Increases in tropospheric ozone are believed to have caused a warming effect which is 15% of that due to increases in carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases over the same period.
