Abstract

Abstract This paper presents some of the conclusions from the results of about 300 Black Ball flights in which the total atmospheric infrared radiation is measured in terms of an equivalent radiation temperature. The data presented include typical measurements and a seasonal analysis of the radiation at various pressures. The measurements indicate that the net loss of energy to space by infrared radiation is considerably less than calculations have indicated and cast doubt on some of the assumptions implicit in those calculations.
