Abstract

The authors determine the metal corrosion rate that is a relative characteristic of the aggressiveness of an industrial atmosphere. Tests were performed on St3 low-carbon steel coupons. The corrosion rate was evaluated gravimetrically after each 30 days of exposure during the years 1980-1982 in an industrial atmosphere at the Kirishi Petroleum Refinery, this climate being distinguished by high humidity and a high proportion of days with atmospheric precipitation. A list of values for the yearly average rate of atmospheric corrosion of carbon steel in the different zones of the primary crude oil processing unit is presented. Corrosion rates are highest in the zones of the electrodehydrators and electroseparators, which are periodically opened up for washing and removal of sludge; rates are lowest in the zones of the furnaces, heat exchangers, and pumps handling hot products, owing to the absence of moisture which is vaporized from the metal surface under the influence of the high operating temperatures.
