Abstract

Measurements of the ac impedance of lithium disilicate glass show it to have a resistive surface layer of thickness comprising 0.01 to 0.1% of the bulk glass. This layer is present on freshly prepared glasses. It can be removed by heating under vacuum at ≈300°C and subsequently reformed on exposure to moist CO 2 . Moisture alone does not appear to lead to layer formation. These results show the potential of the ac impedance technique for monitoring surface reactions.
