Abstract
Methanol has produced the largest number of different optically pumped laser lines from a single source. The emissions available up to date are listed in Table I which also gives a significant idea of the continuous growth in the field. In fact the total number, as deduced from the recent reviews in ref. i, was 682. The success of methyl alcohol as an active FIR medium derives from the excellent overlap which exists between the strongly absorbing CO stretch band and the CO 2 laser emissions, and from the complexity of the rotational spectrum. The contribution of the internal rotation (OH group torsion) to the transition energy makes possible the generation of very short
