Abstract

AbstractThe nameCotoneaster tomentosusand its basionymMespilus tomentosaare shown to be illegitimate because when published both included the earlier legitimate name,M. orientalis. The original circumscription ofM. coccineawas based mostly on the material ofC.tomentosuswith misadditions ofC.nigerandC.integerrimuss. l. Fruit characters of the latter taxon pro vided the species epithet. The previous intended lectotypes ofM.orientalisandM.coccineaare superseded because they were selected from non‐original material; the new lectotypes are designated here. The history of Pál Kitaibel's material ofCotoneasteris traced, and its identity is established.Cotoneaster coccineusis the earliest name available for the red‐fruited cotoneaster with hairy hypanthia native in Europe and would have to be adopted ifM.tomentosais not conserved againstM.orientalis.
