Abstract

Atish Dipankar (982-1054 CE) is a great Buddhist scholar and Buddhist monk. After learning Sanskrit and Buddhist education, he chose to lead monastic life and after got initiation he stayed at Nalanda, Vikramshila, and Odantapuri Monasteries. He also played a role as principal of Vikramshila Monastery. He propagated Buddhism in many countries including Tibbet. He wrote more than two hundred books for spreading knowledge and Buddha’s teachings. In 1978, his dead body was brought back to Bangladesh by a committee consisting the high officials of Bangladesh and China. VisuddhanandaMahathera was the leader of that Committee. In honor of Atish Dipankar many Universities, Journals, Newspapers and Organizations were named after him. Remembering his great contribution, scholars started research on his life and works. As a result, research on him got multi-dimensional form. The main objective of this article is to uncover the life, activities and works of the Atish Dipankar along with the activities on him in Bangladesh. The research has been accomplished following the content analysis method.
