Abstract
The importance of the mythological and epic literature from Ugarit has long been recognized by linguists, scholars of religion, and others with an interest in the cultural landscape of ancient Greece, Syria-Palestine and Mesopotamia. The existence of in the corpus of Ugaritic texts enables one to approximate the number of deities that may have been prominent in the religious life of the Ugaritic populace and the order in which they appear in these lists suggests something about their relative importance in the minds of those responsible for the keeping of official records. This chapter examines the information about Athtar found in the Baal Cycle which shall be treated as a continuous and complete literary unit Its primary goals will be to re-evaluate the nature and importance of this God based on an analysis of a single aspect of the narrative character development.Keywords: Athtar; Baal Cycle; epic literature; Greece; Mesopotamia; Palestine; Syria; Ugaritic populace
