Abstract

On the morning of May 10 a large wooden cross, crafted in Jerusalem, arrived by boat at a conference center outside Athens, Greece. To the sound of African talking drums, nearly 600 participants in the first Conference on World Mission and Evangelism of the 21st century, received it and prayed together. The 5-meter-high cross contained wood salvaged from olive trees cut down in the building of the wall separating Israel from Palestine. It is a symbol of reconciliation and healing, and of churches standing in solidarity with Christians in the Middle East. Behind it in the opening procession walked delegates carrying banners for the previous twelve world mission conferences going back to Edinburgh 1910, that had been sponsored by the International Missionary Council or the World Council of Churches.
