Abstract

A total of 190 physicians 46 pediatricians 90 residents and 54 general practitioners dealing with children were surveyed about their knowledge on fever and attitudes in treatment The study was conducted in 3 medical faculties one state hospital and one social security hospital giving pediatric residency training and in 15 Mother and Child Health Centers in Istanbul A questionnaire containing 19 questions was filled in by physicians Twenty six percent of the pediatricians 38 of the residents 45 of the general practitioners agreed that axillary fever below or equal to 38 5°C may be dangerous to a child Most of the physicians 77 of pediatricians 81 of residents 45 ° o of general practioners believed that the most important danger of fever was convulsion other reported dehydratation brain damage and paralysis as the leading complications The pediatricians advised to treat fever with antipyretics at higher temperature compared to residents and general practitioners The majority of physicians recommended treatment to reduce fever for prevention of its harmfull effects Twenty eight percent of the pediatricians 1 of the residents 41 of the general practitioners recommended antipyretic treatment for fever of 38 4°C in a well looking child In conclusion postgraduate programmes should be organized to reeducate physicians about the definition consequences and appropriate treatment of fever Key words: Fever Pediatrician Physician Treatment Of Fever
