Abstract

weekends. For these reasons I felt a textbook was needed. Maher's Principles of Psychopatholo gy: An Experimental Approach contained more material on schizophrenia research than any other book I examined. Chapters 12 through 15 summarized and discussed many studies that examine the familial, biological, and genetic determinants of schizophrenia as well as studies of deficits in sensation, perception, learning, language, and thought This book also provided a review of learning theory and could be used as an abnormal text as well; hence, it was my choice. I supplemented the text with reprints, xeroxed handouts, and articles placed on reserve in the library. For those students with greater interest or time, I provided a list of suggested readings. I used the reviews of schizophrenia research in the Schizophrenia Bulletin to bring Maher's 1966 textbook up to date (Gunderson, Autry, and Mosher 1974 and Mosher and Gunderson 1973). A topical course outline follows with some of the reading assignments that were added to those in the textbook. 1. Ethical considerations in research with psychiatric patients.
