Abstract

An analysis is given of the population dynamics of the transition probability model of the cell cycle. The model incorporates a probabilistic phase of indeterminate duration and a deterministic phase of constant duration. Individual cells increase in size according to a prescribed growth law. Sufficient conditions are established for the population to have the property of asynchronous exponential growth. The methods of proof use the theory of positive operators and semigroups of operators.
