Abstract

It is shown that the symplectic Sp(4), Sp(6) and the exceptional G2 gauge field theories with complete spontaneous symmetry breaking through the Higgs mechanism are not asymptotically free. This, together with earlier results for other groups, hints at the existence of a general theorem according to which it would no longer be possible for asymptotic freedom to coexist with the absence of infrared divergences.
