Abstract

The paper considers the reasons and mechanism of one of the viscoelastic fluid flows structural instability phenomena, the asymmetries near the flows stagnation points. Such asymmetries were earlier observed in some experimental and theoretical investigations of counterflows in cross slots. With regard to the previously shown existence of symmetric and asymmetric modes of an upper convective Maxwell fluid flow near its stagnation point, bifurcations in the counterflows are discussed. Possible types are identified of a stagnation critical point: a center, a saddle, and a center-saddle transitional type. The mechanism of a flow asymmetry onset is generally investigated as one of the types of viscoelastic fluid flow instabilities. Additionally, the recently found evidence of asymmetries and bifurcations in the Newtonian fluid counterflows is analyzed.
