Abstract

A stable iridium catalyst bearing a chiral 2-pyridyl imidazoline ligand is described for the asymmetric transfer hydrogenation (ATH) of quinolines and N-heteroaryl compounds. This ATH system employs formic acid as the hydrogen source and water as the solvent. Various quinolines and N-heteroaryl compounds can be efficiently converted into desired products with moderate to good enantioselectiviy at as low as 0.001 mol% of catalyst loading under mild conditions.
