Abstract

AbstractThe ring‐opening copolymerization of propylene oxide with d‐camphoric acid anhydride [α]D −3.4° was carried out with diethylzinc and triethylamine as catalysts. It was found that the products were alternating copolymers which were optically active. The optical rotatory dispersion curves were found to fit a simple Drude equation having a λc value of 201 mμ. The specific rotation increased with increasing intrinsic viscosity of the product. The propylene oxide recovered from the polymerization system was optically active. Its specific rotation increased with increasing polymerization time. It is thought that the asymmetric selective copolymerization of propylene oxide is caused by the influence of the optically active camphoryl group of the polymer end.
