Abstract

Asymmetric photo-effect in bimolecular lipid membranes of oxidized cholesterol separating ferric-chloride and iodide, potassium ferricyanide and iodide has been detected. The bilayer shows two different types of light-induced behavior in these systems. It is proposed that in the first type, in the ferric-chloride iodide system, the large asymmetric photo-effect is primarily due to the coupled photo-oxidation and reduction taking place at the interfaces in presence of redox system, while in the second type, potassium ferricyanide-iodine system, the photo aquation reaction is the primary step leading to photo response on photo excitation.
