Abstract

Mesoporous silica nanosphere (MSN) supported Ru complexes were developed and found to be effective catalysts for asymmetric hydrogenation of ketones. Thus, the reaction of chiral diphosphines 1a-c with [{RuCl2(p-cymene)}2] followed by treatment with chiral 1,2-cyclohexanediamine having propyltriethoxysilane gave chiral Ru complexes 3a-c, which were grafted onto MSN-48 by refluxing in toluene to afford MSN-48-immobilized Ru complexes 4a-c. Asymmetric hydrogenation of acetophenone was carried out under H2 in the presence of 1 mol% of Ru 4a and KOt-Bu to give 1-phenylethanol in 99% conversion yield with 61% ee.
