Abstract

The hydrogenation of acetoacetic ester in the presence of ruthenium, deposited on silica gel, modified with D-tartaric acid at pH 4.2–5.9, yields the (−)-β-hydroxybutyrate, which possesses optical activity. The highest asymmetric yield is observed when the modifying solution has a pH of 5.5.
