Abstract
A review of any American Society of Testing and Materials (ASTM) publication requires some discussion of the evolution of the organization. ASTM is a not‐for‐profit organization that publishes more than 9,800 standard guides, practices, or test methods in the 71‐volume Annual Book of ASTM Standards. Traditionally, the role of ASTM has been to ensure uniform quality by publishing standards for materials and processes. ASTM has made an important contribution in this regard, particularly in manufacturing and materials testing. In the past decade, ASTM standard methods and guides for the environmental field have proliferated and spread into the realm of professional practice. The large number of new standards alarms some practicing professionals who believe their ability to exercise professional judgment is being threatened.
